Norway’s Therese Johaug won the 30-kilometer mass start race for her third gold medal of the Beijing Games, while American Jessie Diggins took home silver.
Diggins’ second-place finish made her the first American woman to medal in an Olympic distance cross-country skiing event.

Johaug took an early lead, staying out in front as winds battered the tracks to clock a winning time of 1 hour, 24 minutes and 54 seconds. Diggins kept a steady pace, finishing in 1:43.3 behind the Norwegian, while Kerttu Niskanen of Finland rounded out the podium with bronze.
After the race, Diggins revealed she had been sick with food poisoning only 30 hours earlier, adding to the grueling nature of the 30km race.
“The last two laps, my legs were cramping,” Diggins said after the race. “We had amazing cheering out there, and I thought, I just can’t give up, I have to put everything I had into the snow today and finish with nothing left. I did try really, really hard.”
Diggins, 30, added the silver medal to her bronze from the sprint event in Beijing, the first ever for Team USA.
