Title Nine, a California-based apparel company, gifted the USWNT $1 million to help close the gender pay gap amid the team’s fight for equal pay.
Missy Park, Chief Executive at Title Nine, said she decided to write the sizeable check after watching “LFG,” a documentary chronicling the team’s equal pay lawsuit.
“This women’s soccer team has dominated the sport like no other, they really are a national treasure,” Park told Reuters.
The donation, according to Park, will go directly to the 22 players currently competing in the Tokyo Olympics.
The USWNT’s lawsuit, which sought $66 million in damages under the Equal Pay act, is currently under appeal after being dismissed in May 2020.
Park also announced a “Kick In for Equal Pay” campaign to match contributions up to $250,000 made out to the USWNT Players Association.
