Friendly reminder that Trinity Rodman is still a teenager, even though she doesn’t play like one.

In her first two games in the NWSL, Rodman had a goal and an assist. She made history in the process, becoming the youngest American to ever score in the NWSL.

That goal saw her named Player of the Match. One game later, her assist to Ashley Sanchez helped break a tie with Racing Louisville and win the game for Washington. Postgame, midfielder Tori Huster said that Rodman “plays years ahead of 18.”

Rodman already made history prior to the season even starting, as the youngest player ever drafted in the NWSL. (Washington took her No. 2 overall.) Being the daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman, the soccer phenom has quickly begun to cement her own legacy and emerge from her father’s shadow, as has been her stated intention.
“You could say it put a fire under me more than pulling me down,” Rodman said in an interview with The Guardian. “I was more in the mindset of, rather than saying, ‘Oh, this is annoying, I don’t even have a name,’ I was more like, ‘Oh, I’ll show these people I am an individual and I’m going to develop in soccer like he did in basketball,’ so I think I’m more driven because of it.”
She also cites her mother as one of her biggest role models.
As the Spirit continue to gradually ease Rodman into her professional career, they may want to temper the hype. (She is, after all, still just a teenager.) But if Rodman continues to play as she has, it’ll be hard not to overstate her future potential. Only a teenager, she’s already arrived, and we still have no idea what her ceiling might be.
