When U.S. women’s soccer coach Vlatko Andonovski announced his roster for the USWNT’s September friendlies, Mia Fishel was not on it.
The forward has yet to feature in a USWNT camp since opting to join Liga MX Femenil over the NWSL, despite earning a call-up to the senior national team during her time at UCLA.
Fishel, who starred at the NCAA level and was drafted fifth overall in the 2021 NWSL draft by Orlando, opted instead to play for Tigres in the Mexican professional league.
Though the forward has continued to turn heads with her goal-scoring abilities, Andonovski said he wants to see more from the 21-year-old before giving her another look with the USWNT.
“We do follow her form and her performances, but I also have to say that there are a lot of players in the NWSL that are performing as good and even better than Mia,” he said Monday after releasing the September roster. “She does need to continue playing well and show consistency and for more than two or three games — a consistent 10-15 games, to prove that she belongs on the best team in the world.”
After the roster snub, Fishel scored her eighth goal of the season Wednesday for Tigres in a 4-1 win over Club Puebla. She has eight goals in nine matches this season.
“While you talk, I’ll keep applying that pressure,” she posted on Twitter after the victory.

The USWNT’s current group of forwards includes Ashley Hatch, Alex Morgan, Mallory Pugh, Megan Rapinoe, Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith. Morgan leads the NWSL with 12 goals this season, and Smith is right behind her with 11.
Fishel’s numbers in Mexico stack up, with eight so far this season and 12 in her first season. That gives her 20 total since she joined the team at the start of 2022. If she keeps scoring, she could play herself onto the USWNT roster.
