Four George Washington women’s basketball players have been suspended for one game after a fight during Monday’s game against TCU in Fort Worth, Texas.
Eight players were ejected late in the first half of the contest, five from the Colonials and three from the Horned Frogs. The conflict began when the Colonials’ Essence Brown appeared to pull the ponytail of the Horned Frogs’ Bella Cravens late in the first half and escalated from there.
Brown, Nya Robinson, Jayla Thornton, Caia Loving, and Nya Lok were the George Washington players thrown out of the game. The Atlantic 10 has suspended four Colonials players, but the school did not specify which players.
Neither TCU nor its conference, the Big 12, have announced suspensions for the Horned Frogs players involved in the scuffle.
George Washington lost Monday’s game, 70-58, and now will play with a limited roster when it hosts Manhattan at 6 p.m. ET Friday.
“We learned today that we will be without four of our student-athletes for Friday’s game,” athletic director Tanya Vogel said in a statement. “This is the unfortunate result of good people getting caught up in a bad moment.
“While we believe that many students were trying to defend themselves and deescalate the situation, we are not proud of this moment. Nevertheless, as all things are within the learning environment that higher education provides, we will learn from this and move forward to get better every single day.
“As there is no appeal process and the rules are very narrow, we accept the decision while resting assured that our remaining players will compete with passion and intensity on Friday, just as they did on Monday. We are proud of their determination and look forward to competing.”
TCU coach Raegan Pebley addressed the fight after the game.
“We never want to be a part of anything like that,” TCU coach Raegan Pebley said in her postgame press conference. “It doesn’t matter to me one bit who started it, who said what. It doesn’t matter.
“I definitely know that we have, as do they, high-character kids that the moment got away from all of them.”
