WPBL playoffs take the field tonight, as the four-team league kicks off twin best-of-three semis — with a ticket to the inaugural championship on the line.
No. 1 San Francisco enters as the heavy favorite over No. 4 Boston, after sweeping the pair’s regular-season series 5-0 behind No. 1 overall pick — and home run co-leader — Kelsie Whitmore’s two-way spark.
The Hunters’ longshot hopes hinge on cleaning up a leaky defense while leaning on leadoff hitter Lexi Hastings. Hastings tops Boston’s arsenal with 12 runs, 12 hits, and seven RBIs.
No. 2 New York and No. 3 Los Angeles face off tomorrow. Whitmore’s long-ball race rival Denae Benites helped the Heights stack 32 runs over the last two games to clinch the WPBL playoffs second seed.
New York meets its match in the Queens, claiming a 3-2 regular-season series advantage over the Heights thanks to catcher Ashton Lansdell’s 21 runs, 21 hits, and 14 RBIs on the year.
“Seeing these four elite teams take the field at Robin Roberts Stadium to compete for our very first Championship is a historic moment for baseball,” said Commissioner Justine Siegal. “The time for women’s professional baseball is now.”
San Francisco and Boston open the WPBL playoffs tonight at 7 PM ET (ESPN+).
