Jessica Pegula and Iga Swiatek will face off Wednesday in the quarterfinals at the US Open in a premier matchup of the world No. 1 against the tournament’s top-ranked American player.
Pegula will play in her first US Open quarterfinal, with the No. 8 seed advancing past two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. She battled back from down 2-0 in the second set to win six straight games and beat Kvitova for the first time.
She was the lone player in Monday’s round of 16 matches to win in straight sets.
“I just told myself not to get frustrated,” Pegula said after the match. “She returns really well and it’s difficult if you’re not getting in first serves. I wanted to stay committed to hitting my spots and was able to work my way back.”
En route to the second week of the US Open, Pegula lost just 26 games and one set.
She’ll play Swiatek in the quarterfinals — the same Swiatek who has dropped just 25 games this tournament. She’s also dropped just one set – against Jule Niemeier in the round of 16. But she ran off eight games to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 and advance to the quarterfinals.

“I’m just proud that I didn’t lose hope,” Swiatek said. “She was playing really good in the first set and the second set I tried to focus on the small things that are the base for us. I’m pleased I kept my level.”
It’ll be the second time that the two play one another in a quarterfinal this season, after Swiatek beat Pegula in the French Open quarters on her way to the title.
Also advancing to the quarters were Ons Jabeur, Ajla Tomljanovic, Coco Gauff, Caroline Garcia, Karolina Pliskova and Aryna Sabalenka.
