Rookie midfielder Sam Coffey scored the lone goal in the Portland Thorns’ 1-0 preseason win over the Chicago Red Stars on Friday night.
Coffey broke a 0-0 deadlock in the game’s 73rd minute, curling in a deflected shot from outside the box to put the Thorns up 1-0.

Selected in the second round of the 2021 NWSL draft, Coffey signed a two-year contract with Portland in January after a successful collegiate career at Penn State.
The Thorns end their preseason tournament with a 2-0-1 record, with Sophia Smith taking home the title as the Thorns’ leading goal scorer.
Portland will kick-off their Challenge Cup campaign on Friday, taking on OL Reign at Lumen Field.
