The NWSL’s San Diego Wave and the MLB’s San Diego Padres are basking in their playoff synergy.
Both franchises are in the midst of playoff runs, and both have reached the semifinals in their leagues.
The No. 3 seed Wave face the No. 2 seed Portland Thorns at 5 p.m. ET Sunday. Alex Morgan’s extra time goal sent them past the Chicago Red Stars in the first round in front of an NWSL playoff record crowd.
Meanwhile, the No. 5 seed Padres beat out the New York Mets in the wild-card round and then the Los Angeles Dodgers in the divisional round to reach the National League Championship Series.
Morgan and several of her Wave teammates — Kailen Sheridan, Taylor Kornieck, Sofia Jakobsson and Emily Van Egmond — cheered on their MLB counterparts Tuesday night at Petco Park as the Padres hosted the first game of the series, a 2-0 loss to the No. 6 seed Philadelphia Phillies.

Padres players Jake Cronenworth and Jurickson Profar wore Wave jerseys during batting practice ahead of the game.
The Wave players were returning the favor after several Padres attended their first-round match against the Red Stars, including pitchers Joe Musgrove, Mike Clevinger and Steven Wilson.
“San Diego Wave FC gave the city of San Diego their second home-field postseason win in the last 24 hours!” Musgrove wrote on Instagram after the win. “And no one other than Alex Morgan with the hammer to seal the deal!”
“You win I win,” Morgan commented the post.
The Padres take the field again at 4:35 p.m. ET Wednesday, while the Wave will wait until Sunday for their semifinal contest.
