Former Paris Saint-Germain player Aminata Diallo was arrested and charged with aggravated assault Friday in connection with an investigation into an attack against one of her teammates last year.

Police took Diallo into custody near Paris, marking the second time she has been detained as a part of the investigation. She was first apprehended and questioned in November 2021 following an alleged attack on then-teammate Kheira Hamraoui.

Reports indicated that Hamraoui and Diallo were stopped by two masked men while driving home from a team dinner. One man restrained Diallo while the other attacked Hamroui, leaving her with bruises and cuts but no broken bones.

Diallo has been charged in what the prosecutor described as a planned and premeditated attack on Hamraoui.

Three men admitted to being on the seen, and a fourth admitted to hitting Hamraoui. All four implicated Diallo as the orchestrator of the attack, the New York Times reported.

Diallo has maintained her innocence throughout the investigation, with her lawyers commenting last year on the media spectacle the case attracted, saying,“The public has already condemned her, without justification.”

Since the incident, Diallo has retired from professional soccer, leaving the sport after her PSG contract expired this summer. Hamraoui is under contract with PSG but is in a dispute with the club after not being selected to play for the team.

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Aminata Diallo was released from police custody on Thursday as French authorities continue to investigate an attack on teammate Kheira Hamraoui.

Early reports indicated that Hamraoui had accepted a ride home from Diallo following a team meal. The car was allegedly then stopped by two men and, as Diallo was held by one of the men, the other assaulted Hamraoui, injuring both her hands and legs. Hamraoui reportedly suffered cuts and heavy bruises but no broken bones.

Diallo has been accused of hiring the hitmen to injure Hamraoui and prevent her from competing for playing time.

Diallo was arrested in her home on Wednesday. According to the New York Times, authorities extended her detainment for further questioning on Thursday. After that, she was released, since French prosecutors have just 48 hours to charge suspects with a crime. Diallo has not been charged with a crime, but the investigation is ongoing.

According to multiple reports, a man connected to Diallo was taken into custody for questioning and subsequently released. A report by The AFP indicates that a third PSG player, Sakina Karchaoui, issued a statement to police on Thursday upon request.

PSG is set to face Lyon on Sunday. Last season, PSG won France’s Division 1 Féminine title, ending Lyon’s 14-year reign atop the league.

Paris Saint-Germain player Aminata Diallo was taken into custody on Wednesday as part of an investigation into an attack on teammate Kheira Hamraoui last Thursday.

The arrest came one day after Diallo replaced Hamraoui in PSG’s midfield for its Champions League game against Real Madrid.

Details of the attack were first written up in L’Equipe. According to sources from the NY Times, Hamraoui had accepted a ride home from Diallo following a team meal. The car was stopped by two men while they were driving and both players were pulled out of the car. As Diallo was held by one of the men, the other assaulted Hamraoui, injuring both her hands and legs.

Hamraoui reportedly suffered cuts and heavy bruises but no broken bones. The 31-year-old signed with the club from Barcelona prior to this season.

“Paris St.-Germain is working with the Versailles police to clarify the facts,” the team said in a statement, confirming Diallo had been taken into custody. “The club is paying close attention to the progress of the proceedings and will study what action to take.”

Diallo and Hamraoui are not only teammates on PSG but also the French national team. Diallo has been accused of hiring the hitman to injure Hamraoui in order to prevent her from competing for playing time.

PSG is coming off of a season that saw them end Lyon’s 14-year reign atop France’s Division 1 Féminine and take home the league title.
