Texas and Oklahoma may be joining the SEC.
First reported in the Houston Chronicle, the two teams have reached out to the conference in regards to joining and, according to Sports Illustrated, have told the SEC that they are exploring exit strategies from the Big 12. Neither team has commented on the report.
The move would not be welcomed by all, however.
Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork spoke out against any expansion that would include the Longhorns.
“We want to be the only SEC program in the state of Texas,” Bjork told reporters. Reportedly, he even told SEC commissioner Greg Sankey something similar.
“I talked to the commissioner and I expressed the same things I told you, about our feelings and perspective,” Bjork told Sports Illustrated. “Those perspectives haven’t changed since A&M joined the SEC. Those are the reasons A&M joined the SEC.
“That’s why we left, to have our own identity. We’re a flagship university. We have the size and scale. It’s been a great fit and we want to maintain that moving forward. Everybody in the SEC knows that.”
Commissioner Sankey declined to answer questions about the move at SEC media days.
