U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona told ESPN that transgender athletes’ rights should be protected.
In a sit-down interview with the outlet, Sec. Cardona emphasized that transgender athletes are students first and foremost and that “they deserve every right that every other student gets.”

The Secretary of Education said that if the administration felt rights were being violated, they will act.
Cardona’s comments came after Florida announced a ban on transgender athletes competing in girls’ and women’s sports earlier this month.
