Carli Lloyd continues to speak out about the U.S. women’s national team’s perceived lack of a winning culture following the team’s 2-1 loss to Germany.

The two-time World Cup winner took to Twitter on Friday, writing that the USWNT has lost the underdog mentality that had once defined it. On Thursday, the team lost its third straight game, marking its longest losing streak since 1993.

“The winning culture and mentality that has carried on from generation to generation within the USWNT has been fizzling away,” Lloyd wrote on Twitter.

“I said it when I retired,” she continued. “I saw it slipping away. Players have to embody that. That’s been our DNA since the 80s, but not so much anymore.”

Lloyd, who spent 17 years on the national team, has been outspoken during her retirement about the end of her time with the USWNT. In March, she appeared on a podcast with Hope Solo, during which she said that she hated playing on the team over the last few years.

She also said that the culture “was the worst I had ever seen it.”

Lloyd continued to emphasize the culture shift on Friday. She also recognized the increase in talent and competition on other country’s national teams.

“Accountability. Passed down from the 80s to 90s to the 2000s and here we are now….has been slowly fizzling away. Wanting to win has taken on a different meaning,” she wrote in another tweet. “The rest of the world doesn’t fear us anymore. They used to lose the game before it started.

“We have more technically better and talented players than ever before in the history of the USWNT. The rest of the world have invested more. The rest of the world are also fit and mentally tougher. That was always our edge. But now that’s fading. So you’re left with just talent?”

But Lloyd also placed some of the lack of culture on coaching.

“I do believe it’s the coaches responsibility to instill that,” she wrote. “You can’t expect all players to automatically have that. Trainings need to be competitive. There has to be an underdog mentality. And to fight till the end in every game and training. Winning friendlies matter.”

Lloyd isn’t the only former USWNT player to speak out. Following the loss, Heather O’Reilly addressed the team’s lack of aggression in the final 30 minutes.

Winning the 2025 NWSL Shield in record fashion, the Current haven't suffered a home loss all year — though that could change if an adductor strain continues to sideline Kansas City's back-to-back Golden Boot winner Temwa Chawinga.

The team has yet to provide an update on Chawinga, though the striker did sit out last Sunday's 2-1 win over the No. 6 San Diego Wave.

"Obviously Temwa's an amazing player, but our bench is is incredible," Kansas City defender Elizabeth Ball said ahead of the team's 2025 NWSL regular-season finale. "Our whole squad is always ready for whatever's thrown at us."

The Current hold a 2-0 winning record over the Bats this season, with Gotham managing just one regular-season win in their last five matches.

"We're not performing terrible — we're actually playing well," Shaw said. "We have moments in the games where we're doing really well. It's just the last touch to score goal, or the last block, or being in the right positioning to prevent a goal."

The No. 1 Kansas City Current will host No. 8 Gotham FC for their 2025 NWSL quarterfinals clash at 12:30 PM ET on Sunday, airing live on ABC.

Football Manager's new women's soccer offering follows similar moves from other video game entities, with EA Sports also expanding its integration of women's teams and players across its NHL, FC, and NBA2K games in recent years.

Launched in 2004 by British developer Sports Interactive and gaming giant Sega, Football Manager puts users in the driver's seat of their favorite teams, navigating club finances, player transfers, tactics, and even training plans in the hunt for success.

To mimic the manager role most realistically, FM amasses extensive data on players and clubs — with that information bank now so deep on the men's side that clubs have employed it for scouting purposes for over 10 years.

The road to launching a similarly real-world women's game required similar stat-gathering, a project which began in 2021.

"An army of people from the women's game helped us, who wanted us to ensure that women's football was properly represented," said Sports Interactive studio director Miles Jacobson.

Football Manager also recreated their motion capture models using former WSL and WSL2 professional players, twins Mollie and Rosie Kmita, to accurately portray women's movement and body structure in FM26.

"Growing up, I would never have imagined playing Football Manager because it wasn't a space for us," Mollie told BBC Sport. "I think we're about to engage a whole new audience and I'm excited to see how this community continues to grow."

With the 2026 Winter Olympics only a few months away, hockey giants Canada and the USA are hitting the ice, tuning up for February's global showdown with the pair's annual Rivalry Series.

The four-game slate kicks off in Cleveland, Ohio, on Thursday before the titans clash again in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday, with the 2025 Rivalry Series finishing up with two games in Edmonton, Alberta, next month.
