WNBA All-Star captains A’ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart selected their teams Saturday afternoon for the game, which is set for 1 p.m. ET Sunday, July 10, in Chicago.
Wilson and Stewart received the most fan votes for the All-Star game, for which they earned their roles as captains.
Sue Bird and Sylvia Fowles, who both have announced that they plan to retire at the end of this season, already were set as co-captains. While Bird originally was slated for Team Wilson and Fowles for Team Stewart, but Wilson and Stewart orchestrated a swap, so Wilson ended up with Fowles and Bird with her Storm teammate.
The captains filled out the rest of the rosters with the draft, starting with Chicago Sky star Candace Parker, the first overall pick for Team Wilson.
Stewart selected Seattle Storm teammate Jewell Loyd first among the All-Star reserves, saying, “With the first pick in the second round, I’m going to go with my teammate, Jewell Loyd — the bucket.”
Wilson also showed team loyalty, selecting two of her fellow Las Vegas Aces in starter Kelsey Plum and reserve Dearica Hamby.
