Latricia Trammell is the new head coach of the Dallas Wings. Trammel spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks.

The hiring of Trammel first was reported by The Next on Nov. 1, and the Wings made it official Monday. She was expected to sign a three-year deal, sources told The Next.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Dallas Wings and I am honored and excited to lead this talented roster,” Trammell said in a statement.

The defensive-minded coach also had conversations with the Indiana Fever and Connecticut Sun, Just Women’s Sports and Winsidr analyst Rachel Galligan reported. She was a candidate for the Phoenix Mercury job last offseason, but that job went to Vanessa Nygaard.

In Dallas, Trammel will take the role vacated by Vickie Johnson, who held the position for two seasons. The Wings chose not to exercise the option on Johnson’s contract after she led the team to back-t0-back playoff appearances — but also back-to-back first-round exits.

Trammell has worked in the WNBA since 2017, when she became an assistant coach for the San Antonio Stars. She’s spent the last four seasons as an assistant with the Sparks, helping the team finish in the top three in defensive rating in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Previously, she led Oklahoma City University to two NAIA Division I national championships (in 2014 and 2015) as head coach.

“Coach Trammell has proven to be a winner at every level of basketball she has coached, including the WNBA,” Wings president and CEO Greg Bibb said in a statement. “I have long admired the approach Latricia takes with coaching, which includes exhaustive preparation, an emphasis on communication and relationships, and a continual desire to learn and grow her craft.”
