Upsets abounded on Friday at Wimbledon, with No. 5 Maria Sakkari and No. 15 Angelique Kerber among those ousted from the tournament in the third round.

Tatjana Maria got the best of Sakkari on Friday 6-3, 7-5 to reach her first Round of 16 at a major. She also avenged a first-round loss to Sakkari in the Australian Open earlier this year.

After the win, Maria said that defeat gave her confidence because she felt she had played well against the world top 10. This time around, she hit 19 winners and just 12 unforced errors to record the fifth top-10 win over her career, while Sakkari was undone by 29 unforced errors to 28 winners.

“The first time in the last 16, so that’s already amazing,” Maria said. “To win against Sakkari today, it’s pretty awesome. I think I played a good match from the beginning to the end.”

Prior to this week, Maria had not won a match in the main draw at a Grand Slam since 2018.

Over on Court 1, Elise Mertens took care of business against Kerber in a clean 6-4, 7-5 win over the No. 15 for her first top-20 win in over a year.

The two had met only once before at the WTA 1000 Doha in 2019. Mertens beat Kerber in that match en route to winning the title. On Friday, she converted five of seven break points and hit 18 winners to Kerber’s 16.

Mertens next plays No. 3 seed Ons Jabeur, who knocked out Diane Parry in a decisive 6-2, 6-3 win.
