The 2026 WNBA roster cuts hit home Tuesday, as the Atlanta Dream waived guard Holly Winterburn. The move came just hours before the team’s season opener.
Winterburn, a standout British guard, missed the 2025 season due to injury. She was finally poised to make her professional debut against the Dallas Wings. Instead, the 25-year-old received the roster news while boarding the team bus for the game.
The former Oregon star shared her story in a now viral Instagram post, noting that she expected to experience her "Welcome to the W" moment quite differently.
"I thought my welcome to the W moment would happen on the court, not as I’m getting on the bus for my first ever game," she wrote. "But that’s the reality of this business & I will always be grateful for the opportunity Atlanta gave me."
The news hit Winterburn particularly hard following a grueling injury recovery. However, she seemingly solidified her spot with a strong 2026 WNBA preseason performance. On May 3rd, the 25-year-old guard showed flashes potential against the Washington Mystics, recording 12 points, two steals, and two assists across 22 minutes.
Despite those stats, the Atlanta Dream opted to prioritize championship experience. The team recently claimed Toronto Tempo pickup Aaliyah Nye off waivers, after Nye helped the Aces to a 2025 title.
What’s Next for Holly Winterburn After WNBA Roster Cuts
Now entering WNBA free agency, Winterburn becomes one of the most interesting available talents on the market. Her combination of size and international experience with England makes her a top target for teams currently searching for backcourt depth.
Although the league's 144-player limit makes WNBA roster cuts a harsh reality, Winterburn promised fans in a final message that she isn't finished with the league.
“Everything happens for a reason and I’m so excited for what’s next,” she wrote.
