Coco Gauff opened her 2026 Wimbledon campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Germany's Tamara Korpatsch on Monday. The No. 7 seed needed just 54 minutes to score a spot in the second round of the London Grand Slam.
Coco Gauff Scores Grass-Court Bounce-Back in Wimbledon Opener
More importantly, the victory ended a grass-court drought that had followed Gauff since 2024, while producing the most lopsided Wimbledon scores of opening day.
She went winless on the surface across all of last season and dropped a three-set match to Paula Badosa at the 2026 Berlin Open earlier this month. Before Monday, her last grass-court victory came in the third round of the 2024 Wimbledon championships.
Gauff erased any lingering doubts about her form on the surface early by taking control after 2-2 in the first set.
From there, she won nine games in a row to close out the match. Her serve went untouched with no break points faced in eight service games, and she finished with 19 winners to Korpatsch's four. The two-time Grand Slam champion was equally effective moving forward, converting 14 of 16 net points during the match.
"I definitely didn't want to continue three years," Gauff said of her skid. "Even in Berlin when I lost, I felt like I played a good set. I'm trying to take the positives where I can."
Gauff next meets Argentina's Solana Sierra on Tuesday, adding another must-watch match to the 2026 Wimbledon lineup.
