Sofia Kenin failed to advance past the first round at the 2026 Hong Kong Open on Wednesday. Mika Stojsavljevic made sure of that, knocking off the former Australian Open champion 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 as a lucky loser.
The 17-year-old Brit pushed Kenin to the brink, ultimately winning the back-and-forth battled that produced 11 service breaks over two hours and 19 minutes.
Mika Stojsavljevic Gets Call-Up After Leylah Fernandez Withdraws
The result was all the more impressive considering the teenager from London only had an hour to prep for the match. Canadian breakout Leylah Fernandez was originally slated to face Kenin, but withdrew with a left shoulder injury just shortly before the walk-on.
Despite the last-minute notice, the Stojsavljevic seized early control to build a one-set advantage and an early break in the second. Kenin, ranked 224 places higher on the WTA Tour, clawed back to level things later in the frame, but she couldn't hold onto that momentum.
Stojsavljevic surged ahead 4-1 in the decider, and although Kenin narrowed the gap with a late break, the Brit sealed the upset on her second match point.
"I kind of just went out and swung today," Stojsavljevic said. "I know she's a Grand Slam champion and it was never going to be an easy match, but I believed in myself and it worked out."
With the win, Stojsavljevic scored her first WTA main-draw victory. The result also added another milestone to a breakout 2026 season that already features a Billie Jean King Cup debut win and a quarter-final run at the Birmingham Open.
Next up, Stojsavljevic faces world No. 67 Zeynep Sonmez in Thursday's second round.
