Alex Eala made history at Wimbledon 2026 on Saturday, becoming the first Filipino player to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam. The 21-year-old knocked off defending champion Iga Świątek 7-6(9), 6-2 on Centre Court. And she did it with one of the most memorable shots of the tournament.
The Dive Shot That Sparked Alex Eala's Comeback Against Iga Świątek
After surviving an 84-minute opening set where she saved two set points in the tiebreak, Eala produced a play that will probably follow her for years.
She slipped on the baseline grass, launched her body parallel to the turf, and somehow got her racket on the ball while fully airborne.
The dive shot cleared the net, though Świątek put away the winner with Eala still grounded. Still, the effort sparked a 4-0 run that sealed the second set for the No. 29 seed.
Inside Alex Eala's Historic Wimbledon 2026 Run
Throughout the match, Eala proved to be the sharper player. Świątek finished with 44 unforced while Eala committed just 21. She also converted five of seven break points to cap off the win, collapsing to her knees in tears at match point.
"To younger me, this is everything," Eala told the crowd after her historic win. "It is incredible to have my countrymen cheering me on, knowing that we are all in this together. This goes out to them, my family and all the girls with ruffled socks and chubby cheeks. It means the world."
Eala next faces No. 13 seed Jasmine Paolini in the Round of 16 on Monday.
