Olympic organizers announced Monday that the 2022 Beijing Olympics will not be open to the general public.
Tickets will be available for the Winter Olympics, but as “part of an adapted programme that will invite groups of spectators to be present on site during the Games.” It is unclear who will be invited or how many spectators will be present.
“The organizers expect that these spectators will strictly abide by the COVID-19 countermeasures before, during and after each event as pre-conditions for the safe and sound delivery of the Games,” the Beijing 2022 organizing committee said in a statement.
International spectators had already been banned from attending the event due to COVID-19.
Vaccinations are not required for athletes at the Winter Games, but they will have to quarantine for 21 days upon arrival in Beijing. Athletes will also be tested daily for COVID-19. Organizers have also implemented a “closed-loop” system that will restrict participants to certain areas and isolate them from the general public.
The Games are set to begin Feb. 4.
