U.S. women’s national team forward Mia Fishel sustained an ACL tear in her right knee during training, the team announced Tuesday.
Alex Morgan will replace Fishel on the roster for the Concacaf W Gold Cup.
“I’m gutted for Mia, and I know the team and the entire staff is as well,” said U.S. interim head coach Twila Kilgore. “She’s been very effective in camp and has worked hard to make an impact. Since she’s been getting call-ups to the National Team, she’s shown a tremendous growth mindset, a desire to absorb information and has been a total team player. I know she’ll come back strong and hopefully be in the mix for the next World Cup.
“As we start this tournament, we’re fortunate to be able to add a player like Alex to the roster. Her accomplishments speak for themselves, she’s been training extremely hard with the Wave in preseason, and I know she’ll be more than ready to contribute in this tournament.”
It’s yet another blow to both the USWNT and Fishel’s club team Chelsea, who lost forward Sam Kerr to an ACL tear earlier this year.
Fishel is the latest women’s soccer player to tear her ACL in the last three years, joining a list that includes teammate Catarina Macario and the USWNT’s Christen Press. Others include England stars Beth Mead and Leah Williamson, and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas.
Fishel had just been getting going with the USWNT, earning her first call-up in 2020 and her first international appearances toward the end of last year. She scored a goal in just her second USWNT appearance, against Colombia in a 3-0 win.
Morgan was left off the roster for the Concacaf W Gold Cup, but is a seasoned veteran with the national team, having scored 121 international goals in 215 appearances. This will be her 15th year suiting up for the U.S., with her most recent appearance coming last October.
The USWNT opens its Gold Cup tournament against the Dominican Republic on Tuesday at 10:15 p.m. ET.
