Caitlin Clark has one scoring record down, and others are within reach.
On Thursday, the Iowa star broke the NCAA DI women’s basketball scoring record with 3,569 points. That puts her 98 points behind the all-time NCAA DI scoring record, set by Pete Maravich with 3,667 points.
“Caitlin’s special,” Steph Curry, one player that Clark models her game after, told ESPN. “The record speaks for itself, and it’s cool. From a scoring perspective, from a shooting perspective, just doing what she’s doing — she could pick anybody that she talks about in terms of being an inspiration. If she models something of her game after me, I don’t take that for granted.”
The Maravich record has stood the test of time, standing for more than five decades. He set it averaging an insane 44.2 points per game, and in just three seasons – back before the NCAA made freshmen eligible.
The only player to come close to Maravich was Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy, who in his fifth year came within three points of the record.
Currently, Clark is averaging 32.7 points per game this season, putting her on pace to break the record on Iowa’s senior day against Ohio State in the regular-season finale. She could also break Kansas’ Lynette Woodard’s AIAW record, which stands at 3,649 points.
