Ebony Salmon has opened up about Racing Louisville’s decision to fire head coach Christy Holly in September, calling it “the right thing for him to go.”
The rookie NWSL forward joined Goal’s “All of US: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Show” this week to discuss her move from England to the United States and Racing Louisville’s decision to terminate Holly “for cause” in their debut season as an expansion club.
“For me and for the team, it was obviously tough,” Salmon said on the podcast. “No one really ever expects to lose a coach in the first season as a team. But I think it was the right thing for him to go.
“It wasn’t easy for us as a team, but together we dealt with it, we pushed on from it. We responded well, we got incredible support from the club and everyone higher up at the club to give us everything we needed to move on from that and not forget about it.”
Many Louisville players, like captain Michelle Betos, have praised interim coach Mario Sanchez for the work he’s done since Holly’s firing. Salmon, who led the team with six goals during the regular season, lamented Racing Louisville’s ninth-place finish but expressed confidence in their future.
“We didn’t end up where we wanted to end up the season. We didn’t make the playoffs,” she said. “But I think we’ve come through a lot as a team, which is going to stand us in good stead for the future.”
