Virginia Tech star Elizabeth Kitley will miss the NCAA tournament with an ACL tear, coach Kenny Brooks said Thursday.
He confirmed that she tore her ACL in the team’s final regular season game. Kitley missed the entirety of the ACC tournament, with the Hokies losing to Notre Dame in the semifinals.
On Wednesday, Kitley was named a second-team AP All-American for the 2023-24 season. She was sixth in the country in points and rebounds with 22.8 PPG and 11.4 RBG. Both led the Hokies on the season.
"She's been emotional. I've been emotional," Brooks said. "We probably text 30 times a day. She will be good and then she will be sad. She's put everything into this. She's the reason we're here. If it weren't for her and the way she plays we would probably be somewhere else at a different venue instead of being able to host, instead of being able to say that we're the ACC regular season champions. The kid eat, slept, drank everything Hoke basketball.
"Heading into [postseason], she was playing out of her mind. We were playing out of our minds. ... For everything to be taken away from you in a split second, it's devastating. It's probably been the hardest two weeks that you've ever had coaching, just trying to keep her mental state together, but also the team, because everyone is really close knit. And to see her go down, their heart is out for her."
Brooks said that part of the reason hasn't announced the injury until now was to protect Kitley's mental health.
"I just went into protective mode," he said. "I promise you, I'm not trying to be deceitful or anything like that, but the main focus was her."
In an Instagram post, the fifth-year senior said that she didn’t expect her NCAA career to end this way.
"This is not at all how I anticipated ending this year with my team, but I’m so proud of all of our accomplishments, and I’m excited to see my girls continue to compete," she wrote. "Thank you to all of Hokie Nation for being so supportive during this tough time. I’m looking forward to making a strong comeback."
Virginia Tech, a No. 4 seed, is set to play No. 13 Marshall in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Friday at 3:30pm ET.
