The same day a report emerged that the 2023 Women’s World Cup could be postponed, FIFA said the event would go ahead as scheduled starting next July.
French publication L’Equipe reported Thursday that FIFA had floated the idea of postponement with several European football associations.
The discussions centered on delaying the tournament until the European winter and the Australian summer, L’Equipe reported, which would allow for more favorable conditions, such as extra daylight in host countries Australia and New Zealand.
A change in dates also also could help entice broadcasters. Per L’Equpe, bids submitted to FIFA for the upcoming tournament in Australia and New Zealand were well below the €20 million collected for the 2019 tournament in France.
While a FIFA spokesperson wouldn’t comment on the L’Equipe, the spokesperson told ESPN that the dates for next summer’s World Cup remain unchanged and that there are no current plans to alter the schedule.
“After a successful ‘One Year to Go’ event, the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is scheduled to kick off on 20 July 2023,” a FIFA spokesperson told ESPN. “No changes to the dates of the competition are foreseen.”
Football Australia told ESPN that the organization was unaware of any talks about a postponement.
“Following recent ‘One Year To Go’ celebrations across Australia and New Zealand, Football Australia continues to plan towards the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023 kicking off in July next year as scheduled,” a Football Australia spokesperson said.
