Gotham FC kept its grip on the NWSL Shield race after beating Orlando Pride 2-1 at Inter&Co Stadium on Sunday. Despite the road win, however, the club still needs one more result on Decision Day to stay on top of the NWSL standings and clinch the regular-season title.
Gotham Strike Early Despite Missing Stars
Midge Purce got the visitors started in the 22nd minute, heading home a Guro Reiten cross to give Gotham an early cushion. The team then went up 2-0 when captain Tierna Davidson knocked in a rebound in the 62nd minute. Orlando's Solai Washington trimmed the deficit to one just three minutes later, but Gotham held firm down the stretch.
And they earned the win while shorthanded as Gotham benched both Rose Lavelle and Jaedyn Shaw. Head coach Juan Carlos Amorós, meanwhile, dealt with a stomach bug that kept him from his postgame media duties.
"I think what's contributed to this is just kind of the togetherness," assistant coach Shaun Harris said of the win. "Everyone's kind of backs against the wall."
Where Gotham FC Sits in the NWSL Standings
Even so, the NWSL standings didn’t tip all the way in Gotham’s favor. Sunday's 2-2 draw between the Boston Legacy and San Diego Wave left the NWSL Shield race on hold until Decision Day.
Gotham now faces Utah on November 1st, needing just one point to lock it up. The 2026 Shield would pair with June's Challenge Cup win, setting the Bats up to fight for the NWSL treble in the playoffs.
