The New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces are seriously pursuing San Antonio Spurs assistant Becky Hammon for their head coaching jobs, according to The Athletic.
Hammon played 16 seasons in the WNBA, eight with the New York Liberty and eight with the San Antonio Stars, before retiring in 2014 and taking a position on Gregg Popovich’s Spurs staff. She has served as an assistant with the NBA team for eight years. Hammon made history when she became the first woman ever to serve as a head coach in the NBA Summer League, and she helped lead San Antonio to an NBA championship in 2015.
The former WNBA star became the first woman to interview for an NBA head coaching position when she spoke with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2018. Since then, the Orlando Magic and Portland Trail Blazers have also interviewed Hammon during their respective searches for a head coach.

The Liberty’s head coaching position has been vacant since the team parted ways with Walt Hopkins in early December. Hopkins led the Liberty to their first WNBA playoff appearance in four years this past season after going 2-20 in 2020, his first year at the helm.
If the Aces were to hire Hammon, current head coach Bill Laimbeer would step aside and take on a different role with the organization, per The Athletic.
Hammon, the report says, is expected to make a decision in the lead-up to the WNBA’s January free agency period.
