Mirra Andreeva dropped the first set, then roared back to beat Anastasia Potapova 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in Monday's Andreeva vs Potapova 2026 US Open clash. The fourth-round win puts No. 5 seed into her first quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows.
Mirra Andreeva Battles Back From a Set Down Against Anastasia Potapova
The match between the two friends stayed close early on with Andreeva committing uncharacteristic errors during her service game to give Potapova the advantage.
"I didn’t know what to do in the first set," Andreeva said afterward. "Because I felt she was having answers to everything I was playing."
But the French Open champ dialed in during the third, building a 5-3 lead with a blend of baseline consistency and tempo changes.
"I'm super happy the way I kept fighting," she continued, adding she found motivation late in the frame.
Andreeva vs Potapova Injury Derails Final US Open Set
Still, the win was overshadowed by an unfortunate in-match injury just before Andreeva wrapped things up.
Potapova went down hard while reaching for a forehand in the final game, hurting her left knee. Andreeva went straight to her side, walked her to the bench, and waved over the trainer for ice. Potapova came back with her knee heavily taped but couldn't take another point.
"Nastya, she's my good friend," Andreeva said. "Seeing what a battle we had, and seeing in the last game her fall like this, it's not easy. I'm sure she's going to come back even stronger because she's a warrior. I think she's even a better fighter than me."
Up next, Andreeva faces No. 4 Coco Gauff, who advanced earlier Monday with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Iva Jovic.
