The NWSL has issued a $25,000 fine to the Washington Spirit for violating COVID-19 protocols, which resulted in the cancellation of the team’s Sept. 4 game against the Portland Thorns.

The league also awarded the Thorns a 3-0 win and three points in the league standings based on the forfeit. The game was originally postponed on Sept. 4 after the Spirit reported four positive COVID-19 cases.

While the Thorns are fully vaccinated among players and staff members, it has been reported that the Spirit have several unvaccinated players.

Over the weekend, Thorns star Christine Sinclair publicly called on the NWSL to award the Thorns three points for the game as a result of the forfeit.
