Sam Mewis is expected to be out 6-8 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on her right knee earlier this week.

The North Carolina Courage and USWNT midfielder has played in five matches for the Courage this season. She also won a bronze medal with the U.S. at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this month.

Courage head coach Paul Riley addressed Mewis’ status during a media call last week. He said the team wasn’t expecting Mewis back “for a little bit” but that she should return in time for the playoffs.

Mewis said she hopes to be back for the end of the NWSL season and the USWNT’s fall tour games in October.

“It’s just something that’s been bothering me for a while, so after having discussions with the U.S. Soccer and the Courage medical staffs I decided it was best to get it cleaned up now,” Mewis said in a release. “I feel good and I’ve already started on my rehab to work to get back for the end of the NWSL season and hopefully the October international window.”

The Courage, who sit firmly in second place in the NWSL standings with 27 points, are back in action Sunday against the Washington Spirit.
