Sara Bejlek pulled off one of the biggest comebacks of the 2026 WTA season at the Cincinnati Open on Wednesday night. The 20-year-old Czech star overcame world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 in the fourth round, advancing to her first-ever WTA 1000 quarterfinal.

Despite the stunning result, Sabalenka appeared in control for most of the match. She held a 5-1 lead in the first-set tiebreak and went up 4-1 in the second. But Bejlek clawed back both times, sealing her first career win over a Top 10 opponent in straight sets.
"I totally lost my words. I just keep believing and that was the key today," Bejlek said after the win.
2026 Cincinnati Open Results Lay Foundation for US Open
Bejlek's breakthrough in Ohio follows an impressive 2026 run. She claimed her first WTA title at February's Abu Dhabi Open, after entering that tournament as a qualifier. The confidence has clearly carried over, and now former Australian Open champion Madison Keys awaits her in Cincinnati.
Meanwhile, the loss adds to Sabalenka's struggles heading into her US Open title defense. She enters this year's Grand Slam as the back-to-back defending champion chasing history in Queens.
No women's tennis player has won three straight US Open trophies in Queens since Serena Williams in 2014. More immediately, No. 2 Elena Rybakina can now overtake her for the No. 1 ranking should the Kazakhstani star reach the 2026 Cincinnati Open final.
