Talia Gibson toppled seventh-seeded Maria Sakkari at the 2026 Singapore Open on Friday, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to advance to the WTA 500 tournament's semifinals.

The 22-year-old Australian controlled the opening set from the start, racing to a lopsided 6-1 lead. Sakkari, though, fought back in the second, tightening her returns to level the match at one set apiece. Gibson then regrouped in the decider, pulling away for a 6-2 finish after nearly two hours on center court.
The result extends a breakout run for Gibson through the WTA's hard-court season. Earlier in 2026, she notched wins over Naomi Osaka, Jasmine Paolini, and Ekaterina Alexandrova. All three players ranked well above her current No. 63 spot.
For Sakkari, ranked No. 33, the quarterfinal loss ends what had been a clean Asian swing campaign. She nabbed straight-set victories in her opening two rounds.
Among Friday's WTA scores from Singapore, Gibson's three-set upset was the headliner. She'll meet the winner of the final quarterfinal match between Leylah Fernandez and Maja Chwalińska for a spot in tournament final.
