Taylor Cummings has been crowned the champion of Athletes Unlimited’s inaugural lacrosse season.
Cummings earned 1,943 points over the five-week season, taking control of the top spot on Aug. 15 and holding onto it through the remainder of the season. Goalkeeper Cayee Waters (1,753 points) came in second, while attacker Sam Apuzzo (1,685 points) and goalkeeper Kady Glynn (1,601 points) rounded out the top four.
Cummings showed why she was one of the top players in NCAA history in draw controls, leading the league with 79. She finished her championship campaign with three games of 200 or more leaderboard points in her final nine appearances. She recorded a season-high 226 points in a victory over Team Ohlmiller on Aug. 20.
Additionally, Cummings ranked second with 548 stat points and was named Game MVP eight times, tallying 10 multi-goal efforts and a season-high three goals on four different occasions. Cummings told JWS before the season started in July that she was excited to highlight professional women’s lacrosse through this opportunity.
“I want to thank everyone who made Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse possible,” Cummings said. “It was an honor to play alongside some of the best players in the world during this incredible five-week season and this gold medal is for all the athletes who helped to take this sport to the next level this year.”
Defender Becca Block was named GEICO Defensive Player of the Year in a combined vote of players and members of the Unlimited Club. She finished the season third among defenders on the leaderboard, collecting 1,314 points.
“It is truly an honor to be named the GEICO Defensive Player of the Year,” Block said. “The past five weeks have been a dream come true and it would not have been possible without our awesome sponsors and everyone at Athletes Unlimited.
“A huge shoutout goes to GEICO for recognizing the defensive side of the game that often goes unnoticed. There are so many athletes deserving of this award and it has been so fun getting to play with and compete against some of the best players in the world. I cannot wait to see what Season 2 has in store!”
