Azzi Fudd appears to be nearing a return to the court for UConn.

The sophomore was cleared for basketball activities last week, with head coach Geno Auriemma saying that she is “getting close” to a return. Fudd has been out since Dec. 4 with a knee injury. The team is also looking to get Aubrey Griffin back from COVID-19 soon as well.

“They know there’s a light at the end of the tunnel somewhere,” head coach Geno Auriemma said after practice Friday. “They know we’re gonna get some of those kids back.

“They know we’re not getting Paige and Ice back, but we were pretty good when we had everybody but those two. And I think they understand that those days will be back, provided we don’t trade one for another.”

Initially, Fudd’s timetable for return was three to six weeks. She was cleared at the three-week mark on Thursday and was reportedly doing “a couple of workouts” over the weekend.

“We’ll see how she responds to that and then we’ll go from there, we’ll see. So it’s getting close,” said Auriemma. “Hopefully it won’t be long.”

Following Saturday’s win over Marquette, Auriemma said they’ll “keep their fingers crossed” on whether or not Fudd is able to go on Tuesday.
