USWNT players took a stand against proposed anti-transgender legislation on Wednesday night before the final game of the SheBelieves Cup, wearing wristbands that said “protect trans kids” during warmups.
The final games of the SheBelieves Cup were held in Frisco, Texas.
Earlier in the day, Texas governor Greg Abbott issued a letter to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, directing its employees to begin investigating all transgender children in Texas while prosecuting their parents for child abuse. Additionally, all teachers, doctors and caregivers are being asked to report any transgender students that they see.
USWNT defender and captain Becky Sauerbrunn later took to Twitter to address the anti-transgender letter.
“To deny gender-affirming resources to trans kids and to threaten their parents and guardians with claims of child abuse is MONSTROUS,” she wrote.

Catarina Macario, who scored two of the USWNT’s four goals, showed off the tape on her wrist with the writing to the television cameras after scoring her second goal.

After the game, Macario said that Megan Rapinoe had originally sent a message to the team through a text message with Lynn Williams about addressing the situation.
“With the platform we have, we really wanted to show why this team is different and why we do things that are much bigger than just the game,” Macario said. “It was just a way to show awareness, especially because we were playing in Texas.”
Macario added that she held up her wristband to the camera to “make sure everyone was able to see it, and it wasn’t just another thing getting (swept) under the rug.”
In response, Rapinoe called Macario “a real one.”
Follow the kids 🙏 @catarinamacario you a real one❤️. Like she said #protecttranskids 🏳️⚧️ https://t.co/8ZFkxSLX1i
