The Washington Mystics announced Wednesday that head coach Mike Thibault tested positive for COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated and has entered the WNBA’s health and safety protocols.
As a result, Thibault will not be with the team for its final two regular-season games against the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx. The Mystics are currently 12-18, holding on to eighth in the standings – the final playoff spot available. In order to secure a playoff berth, the Mystics must win at least one of their final two games.
In his place, Thibault’s son Eric, who is also the team’s associate coach, will take over head coaching duties.
On thursday, Thibault took to Twitter to thank everyone who has sent their good wishes.
“Covid is no joke,” he wrote. “Very thankful for being vaccinated.”

The first round of the WNBA playoffs are set to begin Sept. 23 with single-elimination games.
