Australia star Sam Kerr says the Matildas are ready to take on the United States after a tough semifinal loss to Sweden.

“We believe in our team so much, we know that we’ve got such a special team and we really thought that we could win today,” Kerr told Channel 7 after Australia’s 1-0 semifinal defeat.

The Matildas’ captain credited the Swedes on the team’s consistent performance throughout the Tokyo Olympics. “They’ve shown at this tournament that they’re right up there, so credit to them. They’re a really good team.”

Looking forward, Kerr says that the Matildas “can’t be sad too long.”

“We’ve got a bronze medal match, we still have the chance to make history so obviously, a bit disappointed and we’ll learn from it tonight,” Kerr said after Monday’s defeat.

Kerr is preparing for a fired-up opponent, emphasizing that the USWNT has “always shown up” when a medal is at stake.

“They’re a really, really good team and they’ve got amazing players. We’ll play the underdog very well, like we always do.”

Australia will play the USWNT in the Olympic bronze-medal match on Thursday, airing at 4 am ET on the USA Network.
