Arsenal has sold out Emirates Stadium for a WSL league match for the first time.
The match, against Manchester United, marks the first time that the women’s team has sold out Emirates for a Women’s Super League match. It’s the second time they’ve sold out the stadium in team history, joining the team’s Champions League semifinal match against Wolfsburg.
They set a WSL record of 59,042 fans against Chelsea in December – but that wasn’t a complete sellout.
“We are grateful for the incredible support we’ve had all season. Our supporters’ unwavering commitment and following, coupled with the performance of our team and the hard work of everyone behind the scenes at our club, has made this moment possible,” Arsenal CEO Vinai Venkatesham said.
“The next step is delivering this on a consistent basis – not just at Emirates Stadium but across the league. We must continue to nurture this audience and deliver sustainable growth for the whole women’s game.”
Currently, Arsenal sits third in the WSL and in the final qualification spot for the Champions League. Manchester United, meanwhile, sits four points back of them in the fourth spot.
Two more WSL games will be played at Emirates this season, with the team’s north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on March 3 and a match against Leicester City on April 21 also taking place at the stadium.
For the first time in our history…
