Leah Williamson is back with England.
The defender was named to the Lionesses’ roster for friendlies against Austria and Italy. It marks her return to the England lineup after missing the last nine months with an ACL tear.
Speaking Tuesday, England manager Sarina Wiegman called it “really nice” to have Williamson back in the lineup.
“It’s really nice, especially for her. She’s a very good player. She’s back, she’s gaining minutes at Arsenal and doing well,”Wiegman said. “Even though she has been out for months and is still building, her decision-making is really good.”
Williamson hasn’t yet played a full 90 minutes with Arsenal since making her return to her club team in January. She featured as a substitute in the team’s 6-0 League Cup win on January 25th before making her first start back on Feb. 4.
It’s unclear whether or not Williamson will retain her captain’s title, with Wiegman saying it’s a “new moment” and that the conversation about the captain’s armband will have to be had with the group.
This is England’s final camp before qualifiers for Euro 2025 begins in April.
“This camp is where the road to Euro 2025 in Switzerland begins. Playing against strong teams like Austria and Italy is just the preparation we need before we kick off our qualifying campaign in April,” Wiegman said. “I am really looking forward to getting back on the grass with the squad.”
