The College Cup final is here, with No. 1 seed Florida State taking on No. 4 BYU for the NCAA women’s soccer title.
Here’s what you need to know in the lead-up to Monday night’s game.
How we got here
Florida State, Rutgers, Santa Clara and BYU all advanced to the Final Four on Friday night. First, Florida State secured a 1-0 victory over Big Ten regular-season champion Rutgers, with senior Jaelin Howell scoring the game’s lone goal.
In the second game, BYU outlasted Santa Clara 3-2 in penalty kicks. The teams played to a 0-0 draw after regulation and two periods of extra time, leading to penalty kicks. BYU went down early after their first two shooters didn’t convert, but the Cougars scored the next three to knock out the defending NCAA champions and advance to the championship game.
Who to watch for
Mikayla Colohan
The BYU midfielder, a second-round pick of the Orlando Pride in the 2021 NWSL Draft, opted to return to BYU this fall as a super senior and now has the Cougars on the doorstep of their first title in program history. A 2021 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, Colohan recorded a career-high 18 goals and 15 assists this season, leading the country with 51 points. The Kaysville, Utah native is second on BYU’s all-time list in goals, assists and points.
Jaelin Howell
The reigning MAC Hermann Trophy winner has led the Seminoles to their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA championship game. Starting 21 games as a holding midfielder this season, Howell anchored a Florida State defense that recorded 23 shutouts and allowed just 13 goals. The senior, who added two goals and four assists this season, was named a First Team All-American and the ACC Midfielder of the Year for the second year in a row.
What’s at stake
The championship game marks BYU’s first College Cup final in program history. A member of the West Coast Conference, the team earned varsity status in 1995. Since then, they’ve made 22 NCAA Tournaments in their 27-year NCAA history and appeared in their fourth quarterfinal in this year’s tournament.
Florida State, entering its second-straight College Cup final, is seeking to avenge its loss to Santa Clara in May. The Seminoles finished as runners-up to the Broncos after falling on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw through regulation. Two-time NCAA champions, the Seminoles are making their 12th College Cup experience.
BYU (18-4-1) and Florida State (21-1-2) kick off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
