According to the Current, Williams suffered the injury in their opening match of the Challenge Cup on March 18 against Racing Louisville. In that game, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw. Kansas City later beat Chicago 2-1 and currently sit first in Group C in the preseason tournament.
Williams was acquired by the Current in a trade with the North Carolina Courage during the offseason. The reunion of Williams and teammate Sam Mewis was expected to bring depth and goal scoring to the Current, who finished in last place in 2021.
The loss of Williams also has implications for the USWNT, which will now have to readjust its roster for the April friendlies with the loss of Williams, defender Tierna Davidson and Becky Sauerbrunn.
With the addition of Williams, a multitude of NWSL players have fallen victim to leg injuries during the preseason. Davidson was announced to have torn her ACL during training, while Sauerbrunn underwent right knee surgery but is expected to return for the regular season. Angel City defender Sarah Gorden is out for an undisclosed amount of time, also with a knee injury, while Orlando Pride veteran Marta will miss the remainder of the NWSL season with a knee ligament injury.
