Elisabeth Terland's 89th-minute equalizer rescued Man United Women from defeat on Sunday, drawing the Manchester Derby 1-1 while snapping Man City's perfect start to the Women's Super League season.
Tense Women's Super League Derby Decided by Late Equalizer
For most of the match, Eva Olid's side looked the better team, controlling possession and creating chances Manchester City struggled to match. Jess Park's bending shot clipped the bar around the 60th minute, and earlier looks from Terland and Ella Toone came and went without reward.
But it was Khadija "Bunny" Shaw, quiet all evening while Maya Le Tissier shadowed her, who broke through in the 67th minute. Shaw held off Dominique Janssen before slotting one past Manchester United keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce on her 100th WSL soccer appearance.
Man City nearly put the match out of reach in the 86th minute when Grace Clinton beat Tullis-Joyce, but Le Tissier swept the ball away on the goal line to keep United alive. That denial paid off three minutes later. Le Tissier swung a deep cross into the box, Shaw's weak header fell straight to Terland, and she lashed in the equalizer.
Where Man Utd and Man City Land in the WSL standings
The result drops Manchester City behind Chelsea on goal differential after six straight wins and weeks atop the WSL soccer standings. Still, Olid felt her side deserved more than just a point when the final whistle blew.
"Today we really deserved to win," she said. "But football sometimes is unfair."
