Alexandra Eala erased an early deficit to defeat Australia's Talia Gibson 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 at the 2026 Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday.
Gibson tested the Filipina phenom early, taking the first set behind steady baseline pressure. But Eala regrouped during the changeover to flip the match on its head.
Eala Battles Back to Advance in Tokyo
The No. 8 seed found sharper angles in the second, converting multiple breaks to level things at a set apiece. With momentum on her side, Eala blanked Gibson 6-0 in the third to punch her ticket to the WTA Tokyo quarterfinals.
"I think [the key was] really staying in the match, never giving up," Eala said of the win. "The first set was difficult [but] I had my chances. So I knew that if I kept my concentration, I would have more chances."
The result extends a breakout season for the 21-year-old, who picked up her first WTA title in Washington, DC.
Ranked No. 19 in the world, Eala entered the open field in Japan with a clear path to climb. Top 10 withdrawals from Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, and Iga Świątek earlier this week thinned the main draw before action in Tokyo began.
With a quarterfinal berth secured, Eala is within striking distance of a top 15 year-end finish, a milestone that could set her up for an even bigger 2027 season.
