The Dallas Wings are facing early-season growing pains after a frustrating 90-86 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday night.
While the game was a competitive back-and-forth affair, head coach Jose Fernandez did not hold back in his post-game press conference. He pointedly called out a lack of accountability and "selfishness" within his team's locker room that kept them from securing a win.
Dallas Wings Coach Demands Accountability From Big Stars
Despite a 27-point performance from 2026 WNBA MVP contender Paige Bueckers, the Wings collapsed late in the fourth quarter. Fernandez noted that the team’s issues stem from players being too concerned with their individual roles.
"There’s selfishness in this locker room," Fernandez told reporters, emphasizing that championship-level teams don't worry about minutes or shot attempts. Instead, they focus solely on the win.
"You gotta look in the mirror and be accountable on how you played. And don't get upset if you think that you should have played more… or you didn't get the shots that you think you should have gotten."
The guard rotation has been a major talking point as the Wings integrate No. 1 overall pick Azzi Fudd into their lineup. After missing time with a knee injury, Fudd returned to score eight points in 20 minutes off the bench.
Meanwhile, Maddy Siegrist and other role players are still finding their rhythm in Fernandez’s system. The coach made it clear that the film session will "convict" those not putting in the necessary defensive effort, regardless of their offensive output.
Dallas Wings vs. Washington Mystics Preview
The Wings now sit at 1-2 after two consecutive narrow defeats. While Bueckers and Fudd provide a high ceiling, Fernandez is demanding a culture shift before their next matchup.
Dallas travels to face the Washington Mystics on Monday, where the focus will be on chemistry and defensive strength. That game airs at 8 PM ET on Peacock.
