Naomi Osaka defeated Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (2) at Wimbledon 2026 on Sunday. The straight-sets win sends the No. 14 seed into the quarterfinals at the All England Club for the first time in her career.
Osaka Flips the Script Against Sabalenka at Wimbledon
Up until this weekend, the Osaka vs. Sabalenka rivalry had tilted firmly in Sabalenka's favor. The world No. 1 had won all three of their 2026 meetings and held seven consecutive wins in their career head-to-head. But on a warm afternoon at Centre Court, Osaka set the tone early.
The four-time Grand Slam winner broke Sabalenka with an inside-out backhand winner to take a 2-1 lead, eventually running away with the opening set. Her flat groundstrokes and first-serve percentage gave her steady control. She finished with eight aces and 21 winners while saving both break points she faced.
The deciding second-set tiebreak was just as lopsided.
Osaka jumped to a 6-1 lead as Sabalenka committed an uncommon string of errors, allowing her opponent to cap the match at just one hour and 28 minutes.
"She overpowered me," Sabalenka said after the match. "I felt like it was incredible level from her."
Wimbledon 2026 Women's Quarterfinals Schedule
Before Sunday, Osaka had never beaten a top-10 player at a non-hard-court event. She is now the first Japanese woman to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals since Ai Sugiyama in 2004.
With many of the top seeds eliminated, the Wimbledon women's quarterfinals schedule shifts again. Osaka next faces No. 10 seed Karolina Muchova on Tuesday, July 7, for a spot in the semifinals.
