The NWSL is revising its rulebook, as the league announced four key regulation updates this week. The new rules are set to take effect alongside Friday’s 2026 Challenge Cup.
Aimed at reducing time-wasting, the Off-Field Treatment Rule requires fallen players to leave the field for a one-minute treatment period. Meanwhile, the Timed Substitution Rule gives subbed-off players 10 seconds to leave the field or leave their teams short-staffed for a one-minute delay.
Other in-game amendments simplify the hydration break process, limiting heat breaks to 2.5-3 minutes. This stands in contrast to the previous two-tiered, five-minute model.
The league also shined a spotlight on fans, expanding its official Fan Code of Conduct to include online interactions.
The new NWSL rule prohibits threats, harassment, discriminatory language, and abuse directed at players, clubs, officials, and fellow fans.
“The update reflects the league's commitment to fostering safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environments for all members of the NWSL community, whether in person or online,” read Wednesday's press release.
