Held in Los Angeles, the 2022 NWSL Expansion Draft will have nine rounds, with expansion teams alternating picks. Teams are allowed to protect a total of nine players, including one U.S. women’s national team player.
In every round, each team will select one unprotected player or unprotected U.S. allocated player. Angel City and San Diego are each allowed to select just one U.S. allocated player in the draft. The teams have also each received a $150,000 Funded Allocation Money grant that they can keep or exchange if they select an unprotected U.S. allocated player.
Individuals who are on a team’s Discovery List are not eligible to be selected in the expansion draft.
Each team has three minutes to make its selection. After the selection is made, the NWSL will verify the player’s eligibility, approve the pick and publicly announce it. Two five-minute timeouts will be allowed during the expansion draft for each team, but they may not be used in succession.
The league, however, can call timeouts of any length at any time.
While selections may not be traded during the draft, players selected in the draft can be traded upon its conclusion. Teams are also prohibited from making selection information public prior to the league releasing the information.
