Maja Chwalińska won't compete at the 2026 Pan Pacific Open after withdrawing from the WTA Tokyo event with a left thigh injury picked up during her Wuhan Open title run.
The 23-year-old Polish breakout had been seeded second in the draw before retiring.
Chwalińska Gives Injury Update Ahead of Tokyo Tournament
Despite flying to Tokyo ahead of the tournament to test the injury on court, Chwalińska shared that she wasn't ready for match play.
"I travelled to Tokyo early for physiotherapy and on-court practice, doing everything possible to recover in time," Chwalińska wrote on Instagram. "But unfortunately, I am still not ready to compete. I am very much looking forward to playing in Tokyo someday."
The withdrawal caps a bittersweet stretch for the 2026 French Open finalist. Just days earlier, Chwalińska broke through for a WTA title at the Wuhan Open. She fought back from a set and a break down to beat England's Sonay Kartal after knocking off Iga Świątek in the semifinals. That run pushed her ranking to a career-high No. 11.
As of now, Chwalińska's remaining 2026 schedule is uncertain. However, she still features on Poland's Billie Jean King Cup roster for November's matchup against Sweden.
With her spot open in Tokyo, Australian Kimberly Birrell is slotting in as the lucky loser. She'll face US star Alycia Parks in the Round of 16.
