Given to the most outstanding player in women’s soccer, the award is voted on by a panel comprised of the current coaches and captains of all women’s national teams, one journalist from each territory represented by a national team, and fans.
Past winners include Lucy Bronze (2020), Megan Rapinoe (2019) and Marta (2018).
Both Hermoso and Putellas make the list as members of Spain’s national team and Barcelona. Their coach, Lluís Cortes, was named a finalist for the women’s coach of the year award on Thursday.
Hermoso ended the year as the leading female goalscorer of 2021, scoring 35 goals in the Spanish League, plus nine in the women’s Champions League, six for the Spanish national team and one in the Copa de la Reina final.
Both Putellas and Kerr ended the year with 43 goals.
It was a big year for Barcelona, who won the league cup and the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the first time in club history. Putellas recently was named the 2021 Ballon d’Or winner, with Hermoso finishing second and Kerr third.
Kerr has been dominant for Chelsea and the Australian national team all year. In the FA Cup final, Kerr scored twice to help the Blues beat Arsenal. She also had a big Olympics, scoring six of Australia’s 11 goals to become the country’s all-time leading goal scorer.
The winners for all FIFA awards will be announced at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich on Jan. 17.
